Hi i got some real plants for my 3 gallon tank and decided to add 2 nerite snails to clean the alge. Some snails put the kibosh on algae too. Although snails are effective at cleaning your tank they resemble recycling plants more than garbage dumps after all much of the nastiness they consume comes out the other end in the end.

As mentioned above even if a fish does eat poop it still requires a sufficient high quality diet. Ime malysian trumpet snails do a terrific job cleaning up the tank. With tiny mouths snails move about your tank at a methodical pace cleaning up junk that dirties your water such as dead plant matter and leftover food.
